Do I need to own a rucking backpack?
No. Any rucksack that sits comfortably and doesn't swing about will get you through your first few. A proper rucking pack has a plate pocket, a hip belt and a sternum strap, which keep the load high and still, and most people buy one once they know they're going to keep going.
How much weight should I start with?
About 10% of your bodyweight. Build from there in small steps once an hour under load feels straightforward. The YOMP Standard sets out the levels if you want something to work towards.
Do clubs cost anything to join?
That is up to each club, and most are free. They are run by their members, not by us.
Am I too unfit for this?
Almost certainly not. Rucking is walking with weight, which is why people come to it from every level. Start light, start short, and go with a group that waits.
There's no club in my area. What now?
Join the first Saturday ruck wherever you are, and have a look at our guide to starting a club. Several of the clubs on this map were started by someone who'd been rucking for a couple of months and was fed up of going out alone.
I run a club. How do we get listed?
Once you've got five or more regular members and have been running at least three months, apply to become an Official YOMP Ruck Club. Listing on this map is one of the things that comes with it, along with a free pack and plate for the club and a 15% code for your members.
